Our second coif for Agecroft Hall has been finished and presented, but we continue to learn new things, and we hope to meet you all at the Powhatan Fiber Festival on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Lots of reasons to check out our Facebook page.Margarethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01182634416071817358noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048838105852712686.post-35964419281266433992015-03-18T18:12:00.001-07:002015-03-18T18:12:53.726-07:00March 2015 Meeting

We had a great meeting on St. Patrick's Day. Lots to chat about since our February meeting was snowed out.

We are gearing up for our 10th anniversary in September by trying to get as many members as possible to 'sign' our member roll. Members have been stitching their name and some sort of sampler row or small picture or motif on the roll. Each person also add their name to a paper list and describes what they stitched. It is an amazing record of our group. Please talk with Jean Connelly, our chapter president, if you haven't had your chance to stitch yet.

As always, lots of lovely items on our Ta-Da table. The pot holders are too pretty to be used and have been made up beautifully.

Lots of bookmarks for Outreach. Diana sent some up to a group in Alaska. And their are plans to leave bookmarks in random places, with our group information attached, to encourage membership. If you know of a good spot to leave one, let Diana Paisley know.

Our program was twining with artist Jan Hodges. Jan (in dark blue) showed us a neat way to twist just about anything into a cord without the need of any gadgets or really long arms. Everyone played with the various materials, and as Gladys pointed out, you could tell when people figure out the technique because the room went from quite to filled with talking.

Can you believe it? We've lots of fun over the last 10 years and this great group of active members is ready to move into another 10 year, and more. You might even see a few throwback Thursday photos here. And if you have one, be sure to post it to Facebook or send it in to be posted on this blog.

In the meantime, on to current activities.

On March 17, there will be a twining class with Jan Hodges, with kits for those who signed up.
Our Outreach Projects for this year are similar to past years but a little different. We have a new style of bookmark for our reading outreach project.

Our June meeting was a pot-luck and the reveal of the Presidential Challenge pieces. As usual, our Ta-Da table was filled with lovely things.

And we had our first look at the next coif we are making for Agecroft Hall. This one will be blackwork. It was inspired by the Pocahontas jacket that several of us worked on earlier this year. Be sure to let Margaret or Diana know if you want to take the coif home to work on for a month or two. Or you can add a few stitches during a meeting if you prefer.

The President's challenge this year was to create a berlingot shaped pin cushion using a 3" x 3" piece of linen (although a couple of people adjusted the size a bit.) Everyone had a different idea for design and finishing. If you want to try one, you can find instructions here.
Thanks to the organizing efforts of Dee Ragsdale and Mona Cecil, we had extra excitement for our May meeting. Tracy Franklin and Nicola Jarvis, who were teaching RSN classes in Williamsburg, came up to Richmond to visit our group and have a Southern style covered dish dinner. Thanks to everyone who brought food.

Our April meeting was a wonderful class on needle painting taught by Carolyn Porter. Not only was she a patient instructor but she created detailed kits to help us learn about this beautiful technique. As you can see from the photo above, there are tricks to getting the right color combinations for needle painting and Carolyn gave us lots of idea for finding the right combination.

In the near(?) future, you will see quite a few of these beautiful flowers on our Ta-Da table.
Dee has visited the school in England and gave us a history of the founding of the school and the evolution of the sampler styles over the years. To accompany the lecture, Holly Rison brought part of her collection of framed, in progress, and kit Ackworth Samplers. Everyone was impressed with the sampler designs and Holly's wonderful stitching.

For those who couldn't attend the lecture, one of the best sites online to see Ackworth Samplers and order patterns is Needleprint. Both Dee and Holly agreed that the best book is Quaker School Girl Samplers from Ackworth by <span class="a-declarative" data-a-popover="{"position":"triggerBottom","name":"contributor-info-B001HMU4YW","allowLinkDefault":"true"}" data-action="a-popover">Carol Humphrey
For our Meeting on April 15:

Don't forget to bring in your needle work for the chapter display that will be in the Tuckahoe Library in May. Large pieces will not fit in the display cases, but any smaller embroidered or beaded items would be wonderful. Exhibits are one way we encourage others to join our group.

If you have signed up for the Needle Painting class with Carolyn Porter, don't forget to bring:
As well as overdying various shades of Anchor and DMC threads, we had linen and silk fabric, ribbon, and chenille thread. We also had a chance to use cutch dye, alone or in combination with the Cushing Dyes. Catherine did a great job and we had hours of fun. You can get the same dyes and fabrics from Catherine's website if you want to try it at home.

First we tried the Cushing Dyes.
Catherine had cards showing other natural dyes. Who knew the dirt around here could be used to make nice fabric colors instead of just making it hard to clean the kids' laundry.
It has been fun working on it over the last 3 years, but now it is ready to be part of the interpretive program at Agecroft. First it will be on exhibit with the other coifs held in the Agecroft collection. Be sure to go and see the coif and of course Agecroft Hall.

Here is the Saturday turnover with Gentle Pursuits members and two Agecroft representatives.

This is an Outreach meeting and we will stitch bookmarks to benefit the READ Center (see last year's bookmarks above). The chapter is providing the bookmarks, needles, threads, silk ribbon, some idea books, charts and embellishments to make our bookmarks. Bring along your usual stitching supplies. Because these bookmarks are so fast and easy to do, it's a good way to stitch and catch up with your friends. We will be providing a light morning snack and a pizza lunch - as always, please provide your own drink.

During our bookmark stitching, Brenda Roseau from Colonial Williamsburg costuming will be talking about the Pocahontas embroidered waistcoat that is being stitched for Historic Jamestowne.

Sample kits to make the bird shown above will be available for those wanting to stitch a sample and help with the jacket.

Clear Your Stash Any Time
This year we are trying a new way of stash busting/fundraising for our chapter. Rather than waiting until June to bring in any books, charts, kits, supplies, etc., for a silent auction, you are invited to donate a bag or box of items at any meeting.

Clear Your Stash items will be set out and anyone who wants something can write a check to donate what they think is a fair amount.

Each month we will try to have a goodie bag of donated items. You will be able to purchase opportunity tickets for a drawing at the end of the meeting.

Tickets will cost 50 cents; we will not have change available. Please bring exact change if you wish to use cash.

You need to be present to win or give your ticket to a friend to pick up at the end of the meeting.

Margarethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01182634416071817358noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048838105852712686.post-85351365256875321142013-12-15T14:25:00.001-08:002013-12-15T14:25:46.745-08:00End of a Busy Year of Gentle Pursuits

Wonderful food, wonderful Ta-Das and a great meeting in November. Cathy Keith discussed how to use 4 specialty threads (with advice from The Stitching Studio) and the practice piece was a small plastic canvas that fit in a pen. What a great idea for a gift giving.

Here is some further information:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the wedding of Pocahontas to John Rolfe, Preservation Virginia’s Historic Jamestowne will create a woman’s embroidered sleeved waistcoat worked in black silk inspired by a surviving garment in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). This waistcoat will be worn as part of Pocahontas’s wedding attire during the commemoration on Saturday, April 5, 2014.

The original object is an early 17th century woman’s jacket embroidered with depictions of mythical and realistic creatures, flora, and scenes from Geffrey Whitney’s Choice of Emblems and Other Devices (1586). The Jamestown jacket will replace these motifs with fruit, flowers, insects, fish, fowl and beasts specific to Virginia. A matching embroidered coif and forehead cloth will complete the suit.

The jacket in the London museum is embroidered with black silk on a plain weave white linen ground in four basic stitches: stem and outline stitch, long and short, and speckling or seeding stitch. Our adaptation will use those types as well.

Historic Jamestowne is seeking volunteers to assist with the creation of this garment. Skilled and novice embroiderers are invited to contact:

Julie Zellers-Frederick
Volunteer Coordinator
julie@preservationvirginia.org
757-856-1259

You will be sent a small sample to complete, demonstrating the stitch types present in the original garment. All skill levels are welcome. This special project is done in collaboration with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and their Costume Design Center.

Here is the kit:
Trisha Johnson did a crazy quilt ornament class for the group. Trisha pieced the fabric, leaving the embroidered seam treatments to us, and there was a choice of shapes. Lots of choices, which is always fun.
For the Region Challenge for 2013 - to be auctioned off at the regional meeting/Fall SMART (Stitching Mid-Atlantic Regional Tutorial) Day on Oct. 18-20 in Virginia Beach - our chapter created this lovely box. Many members helped with the embroidery and smalls, and Gladys Zorhoff created the box. Nobody wanted to let this beauty go, and several people sent silent auction bids with the people who were attending the meeting. Everyone was happy to see the final product at the October meeting.

Jean taught our annual Members' Appreciation Program this year. A small pulled-work sampler that we can make into an ornament. As usual, Jean made the work seem much less intimidating the many of us thought it would be.
Congratulations to Catherine Jordan! Catherine's Zentangle inspired art box received First Place in Original Professional category, Juror's Award, Delegate's Award and Best of Show at American Needlepoint Guild National Seminar exhibit, Anaheim, CA 2013. Note that the centers of the ribbons all have embroidered designs.

Lots of lovely things at our Ta-Da Table this month as well. We've all had a couple of months to work on things. Carol was lucky she left with all five of her beaded nutcrackers.

We started the month with National Stitch In Public on Feb. 2. We met at the Short Pump Barnes & Noble and had quite a crowd. There were lots of different projects and we had quite a few people show interest in our work.
Next, we met on Saturday, Feb. 16 for our rescheduled Outreach Program. Diana found some really nice bookmarks online that easily fit a small square of stitching on plastic canvas. You can see how many of those we were able to finish in just a few hours. Plus a couple of bookmarks done before the session. We are well on our way to the 70 bookmarks we need by May. And the pizza was great!

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, we had the second part of the acorn stumpwork class. With any luck, somebody will bring their work to the next meeting so we can see how things are going - and get some photos to post.

Speaking of our next meeting, on Tuesday, March 19, fellow member Jennifer Stumpf will present a lecture class on tambour embroidery. If you would like to see some of
her work, you can visit her blog at: http://stitchinginthepursuitofhappiness.blogspot.com/
Thanks to everyone who worked to set things up. Everyone enjoyed the measuring gauge favors. And of course, we all loved the ornament exchange. It is always so exciting to see all the different techniques and styles that appear from the bags.
